VAWA Lawyers - Memphis, Tennessee

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed by Congress in 1994. It serves to enhance the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes committed against women. The act provides for increased pre-trial detention of the abusers and mandatory restitution for those who are convicted. Under VAWA, spouses and children of United States citizens or lawful permanent residents (LPR) may self-petition to obtain lawful permanent residency. These actions are taken to protect women from further violence and seek independence from the abuser. At The Frager Law Firm, we help victims of violence protect themselves.

If you or someone you care about is a victim of domestic violence, contact our toll-free number 1-888-889-VISA or our 24 hour phone line at 901-371-5333. Victims of domestic violence should know that help is available to them through the National Domestic Violence Hotline on 1-800-799-7233 or 1-800-787-3224 [TDD] for information about shelters, mental health care, legal advice and other types of assistance, including information about self-petitioning for immigration status.

Women's Rights are Human Rights

Actively protecting women from violence is a matter of human rights and public policy. For too many years, perpetrators of violence against women acted with impunity. Violent crimes against women went overlooked and unpunished. In many countries, this is still the case. The Violence Against Women Act allows certain battered immigrants to file for immigration relief without the abuser's knowledge. This is a way for you to seek safety and independence from your abuser.

Violence against women is found in various forms, including human trafficking, women who report terrorism activities, and women who have been the victim of a crime. Three types of visas (T visa, S visa, and U visa) are available to you. Contact an attorney from The Frager Law Firm to learn more or to arrange a consultation.
